mike seidel. he's in kansas city, where this storm, by the way, is hitting two days after that huge explosion and fire in the downtown area. but it's just one of the cities in the path. mike, good evening. >> and good evening, brian. so far this storm has been responsible for five deaths here in kansas city. a wall of white rolled through this morning, dumping snow, as much as 3 inches an hour, shutting down the airport and causing a state of emergency. that scene was repeated across many cities and areas of the midwest. armed with snowplows and shovels, the midwest today tried its best to fight back against a wicked winter storm that brought strong winds. near whiteout conditions. even thundersnow. as the deadly system that brought record snow to arizona, oklahoma and texas swept into the great plains today, schools and businesses were closed, and transportation in several states nearly ground to a halt. in kansas, authorities closed dozens of roads and highways, including a 90-mile stretch of interstate 70. parts of the state were buried under more than 14 inches of snow today. it

and kansas city. we'll most likely end up with another foot of snow on top of the last week. amarillo, texas. the second snow west day they've seen with 19 inches of snow reported yesterday. so you can see that the heaviest of the snow is continuing through kansas, through missouri. and that's where we do still have winter storm warnings. blowing snow is creating still thos blizzard warnings across portions of oklahoma. we also, with this storm system, actually have tornado watches posted down across the panhandle of florida. and some of these storms will produce torrential downpours. but the heaviest of the snower the blinding snow, is occurring back through kansas city and right through central missouri. that's where we're seeing the dividing line between the torrential rains and the heavy downpours of snow. again, we could see a foot of snow of course portions of missouri. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. philadelphia will start to see rain move in but not until later on this evening with highs topping out in the upper 40s. tam

[ no audio ] certainly going to be worse than the storm we had last -- [ no audio ] we didn't see -- [ no audio ] >> yeah, that storm is powerful and is clearly affecting her microphone. let's work on that and then get back to her. let's go to jennifer delgado. she's in the cnn weather center in atlanta. what can you tell us? >> i can tell you a lot. we're still looking at snow coming down now for areas like amarillo, they were pounded yesterday with 19 inches of snowfall. but looking at the radar right now, right along interstate 7, you can see snow coming down. rain moving through st. louis. what we're going to see is more of that snow working in as we go throughout the afternoon. some of these locations are potentially going to pick up between 6 and 12 inches of snowfall. when you add that in with winds up to about 20, 25, of course we're going to be talking about very limited visibility. in fact, i want to point out to one bright side from yesterday. we

. brought kansas city it's biggest snowfall in 20 years. wichita top five snowstorm all time. it was a big storm. it's weakening this morning. travel impacts are minimized. the kansas city airport is open after being closed yesterday. as far as the storm goes in the west, this is a new storm coming in, the one in the midwest we're done with. this storm will bring significant rain today and heavy mountain snow up in the cascades. the storm itself is moving into areas of british columbia the front will drag through and a good plume of moisture. the winds will kick up ahead of this. you can see on the radar we're dealing with some rain on the coastal areas. little bit of snow in the last hour or two, intensifying over the mountains of the cascades. there's winter storm warnings and advisories. make sure you check if there's any change north. to the south rain has yet to develop down i-5 towards portland. rainfall many amounts estimated between half an toinch an inch in numerous areas. mountains all snow. the coast could get two inches. winds could gust 40 to 50 miles per hour even in the vall

. some spots in kansas under a foot of snow and heavy windses have shut down kansas city international airport until further notice. let's get right to the extreme weather center. but first, let's go to mike tone bin who has the news from nebraska. i here it's getting worse and worse. reporter: it is put we haven't seen the worth of it here, yet. the snow is coming down right now. the temperatures not that severe 27 degrees. the ground is warm and we're just getting to the point where the snow is starting to stick. by and large it was melting but it is expected to increase. one person in public works estimated we'll have the snow coming down at the rate of an inch in an hour, and he put the over and under at 10-1/2 inches for nebraska. but a lot of advance warning. kids staying home from school. the department of roads here big snow plows working two 12-hour shifts, with the exception of this guy who came in for maintenance. they're all on the road, trying to stay ahead of the weather. >> shepard: snow through tomorrow? reporter: looks that way. worstes to the south and west, wichita,

center, first, let's get to claudia, live in kansas city. looks like the day after. reporter: the sun is out this afternoon. the storm has moved on but it's still a snow day for the kids and a bit of rough going on the roads. not so much on the main highways or the city streets like this one here downtown but more in the residential nabbeds -- neighborhoods where the snow plows have not been able to get in there the roads were an icy mess yesterday. but no major accident or crashes, probably because a lot of people stayed home and poor visibility made it hard for anyone to drive very fast. those out and about do need to be careful, especially if the streets are lined with large snow drifts. we saw some impressive totals yesterday. 10-inches of snow in kansas city. 14-inches in wichita, a record 9.2 inches of snow at the kansas city airport which had to close and cancelled more than 400 flights. the airport is open again now and hundreds of stranded travelers are getting on the way. >> did a good job on the streets. it's my understanding you got all kind of different precipitation ther
